A Ground Up Vision in Detroit Lakes

Background and Vision —

Pelican Landing was conceived as a response to the growing need for high-quality senior living options in the Detroit Lakes area. Prior to its development, the region lacked a modern, integrated care community that could offer both independence and support for aging residents. DW Jones Management, known for its expertise in housing development, partnered with Progressive Care to bring this vision to life.

The result was a $12.6 million, three-story facility offering 76 units across independent living, assisted living, and memory care services. The community officially opened its doors in November 2019, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic

Design and Amenities —

Pelican Landing was designed to promote independence, dignity, and community engagement. Key features include:

  • A open lobby, salon, bistro, and activity rooms
  • Therapy and fitness center with services available to both residents and the public
  • Indoor garages and outdoor spaces for socialization
  • A secure Memory Care Neighborhood for residents needing 24/7 supervision

The community offers à la carte care services, allowing residents to remain in their apartments as their needs evolve

COVID-19 Resilience —

Opening just before the pandemic posed significant challenges. Congregate housing was viewed with caution, and many facilities struggled with occupancy and safety concerns. Pelican Landing responded with:

  • Rigorous safety protocols aligned with CDC and WHO guidance
  • Transparent communication with families and residents
  • Continued staff testing and visitor screening
  • Gradual reintroduction of social events and dining experiences as conditions improved

Despite the initial hurdles, Pelican Landing maintained its commitment to safety and community, emerging stronger and more connected.

Impact and Recognition —

Pelican Landing has been recognized by the DL Tribune’s Best of the Best as the top retirement community and memory care provider in Detroit Lakes.

Families have reported transformative experiences, noting improvements in their loved ones’ health and happiness.

The community continues to grow, with a waitlist for future residents and ongoing enhancements to its services and amenities.
